
A tour for the adventurous rider. Visit the Wollemi wilderness of Dunns Swamp and the historic gold mining towns of Sofala and Hill End. Try your hand at gold panning and check out the once bustling gold rush villages.
Cycle tour of 6 days and nights – approximately 280 km
Level of difficulty- Moderate to Difficult.
Day 1 - 20 km
- Arrive in Mudgee & settle into your very comfortable accommodation
- We will bring you your bikes and explain the Tour
- Take a warm up ride along one of our recommended routes around Mudgee
- This evening (and all days except 4) explore Mudgee's excellent restaurants and cafés
- Your detailed Tour Notes will outline various restaurant options
Day 2 - 55 km
- After a hearty breakfast you depart for Rylstone
- Leave your luggage to be picked up by us
- Follow our recommended route through a picturesque valley
- Part of the route takes you directly through pastoral country properties
- Visit the Lue Pottery works on the way - optional
- Travel at your own pace and arrive in Rylstone at your leisure
- Enjoy the ambiance of this amazingly preserved old stone built town
- Enjoy the shops, cafés and craft outlets in the village
- Arrive at your accomodation where you will spend two relaxing nights
- Make your own arrangements for dinner at one of the great country pubs
Day 3 - 62 km
- Today’s route takes you out to the wonderful Wollemi National Park.
- A beautiful water lake Dunns Swamp, or ‘Ganguddy’ awaits you in the Park where you can swim, hire a canoe on weekends or school holidays, or walk and watch for wildlife
- Again there is plenty of time to enjoy the journey and rest at the Park
- Most of the cycling is an easy gradient along quiet sealed roads
- Pastoral land and eucalyptus trees abound
- Tonight you return to your accommodation in Rylstone
Day 4 - 65 km
- Today’s ride takes in a great variety of country, from undulating to hilly
- Roads are mostly quiet but some may have slightly more traffic
- Enjoy your stay in the very interesting and historic gold mining town of Sofala
- Relax with an afternoon cool drink with the locals and admire the tumbledown streets which are a magnet for local artists
- Tonight’s accommodation is in the village of Sofala
Alternatively, we can arrange for you to stay at a ranch near Sofala for 2 nights. With this option all meals are in-house and deliciously homemade. The second day here you could opt for gold panning or a cycle along the quiet and picturesque Upper Turon River. If there are 6 or more in your party horse riding is also an option.
Day 5 - 30 km
- It is an easier day today riding to the nationally historic village of Hill End
- The road is undulating and some is unsealed, but it is very quiet
- This road has changed very little in 150 years
- After arrival in Hill End and checking in at the accommodation there, use the bikes to explore the town; it has some great lookouts
- Visit the Information Centre and Museum and wander around the picturesque old village and shops, all dating from the gold rush period of the 1870s.
- Try your hand at gold panning.
- Visit the La Paloma Pottery and talk with Lino, the artist and craftsman
- Wildlife abounds and you only have to sit in the pub garden to watch the kangaroos grazing
- And don’t forget some star gazing - the sky is so bright with stars on a clear night you will be amazed
Day 6 – 68 km
- Today is your last day as you cycle back into Mudgee
- This is your last opportunity to soak up a unique experience
- The road is winding with about 13 km of gravel, the rest sealed
- Stop at the small village of Hargraves for refreshments
- Once back in Mudgee you can see more of the town and vineyards
- Return and relax at the same comfortable accommodation you enjoyed on your first night
